Classification is commercially and legally important for recyclers and parts traders. A reusable spare part follows product and trading processes, while a waste component remains subject to waste law. A shop listing or OE number does not end waste status. Actual condition, the intended route and documented assessment must support the decision.
Distinguish three routes
- Reuse: a product or component that is not waste is used again for the same purpose.
- Preparing for reuse: a component that became waste is checked, cleaned or repaired so it can be used again for its original purpose without further pre-processing.
- Recycling or other recovery: material is treated; later end-of-waste status requires the conditions defined in section 5 of Germany's Circular Economy Act.
Assessment route for removed parts
- Record origin, removal date and donor-vehicle status.
- Identify the component through OE/IAM number, variant and visible markings.
- Assess condition, damage, wear, completeness and safety relevance through a defined procedure.
- Document a specific lawful use and evidence of demand.
- Record required cleaning or repair, the outcome, assessor and date.
- Block unsuitable parts clearly and route them to the intended recovery process.
Data for the ERP and part record
- Traceable vehicle and part identity
- Status before and after inspection, including blocking reasons
- Method, measurements, images, assessor and timestamp
- Intended use and applicable technical requirements
- Cleaning, repair or remanufacturing performed
- Decision for reuse, further treatment or recovery

Frequently asked
Does every removed component automatically become a product?
No. Classification depends on previous waste status, condition, assessment and treatment as well as the lawful specific use.
Is a function test enough to establish end-of-waste status?
Not necessarily. German law also requires customary use, a market, compliance with product requirements and use without harmful overall effects.
Why store status in a machine-readable field?
It prevents blocked waste components from being listed and ensures sales channels receive only released product records.
